Water

In January, 2013 the Rotary Club of Smithers donated $3600 to Child Focus Africa for the construction of a rainwater recovery system to be installed on our Dormitory. We occasionally partner, Friends of Kitui, a Catholic NGO from Dublin Ireland which has a lot of experience on the ground in Kenya and offered to install the system for us.

GOOD NEWS! - on March 13, 2013 we received a report fro Friends of Kitui saying that the rainwater collection system, including 3 - 10,000 Litre tanks has been installed on one of the Dormitories. The project was expedited by Sister Clare of Friends of Kitui and came in $100 below budget!  Sister Clare decided to use the extra funds to purchase wood for the construction of tables for the second Dormitory. Our Congratulations and thanks to Sister Clare for her important accomplishment and to the Rotary Club of Smithers for their compassionate donation.  Thanks also to Pat Torpey of Friends of Kitui (based in Ireland) for making this happen.

Below is some background on the water situation in Migwani.  We are considering the possibility of installing a shallow well in co-operation with Friends of Kitui  if we can raise some funds.

Water is so scarce in Migwani that people have to purchase bottled water -This is very hard on a family in an area where the average salary is less than $2.00 per day, and their priority is normally to spend this money on food.  This situation is even worse for the Special Needs Children of our Dormitory.

We have considered drilling a deep well (100 meters) that would service the whole Village, unfortunately because the water table continues to recede so that a well of this nature is not practical.

The practical alternative is the installation of a water collection system which can collect rain during the fall rainy season and store it for use during the dry season.  Such a system is comprised of eave troughs and a storage cistern.

The cost of a water collection system is $3,600.  We are currently seeking funding assistance for collection systems for two such systems.

Below is the Migwani reservoir that once was full of water.

The photo below shows wells which have been dug to a surface run-off level (30 ft.) by women like this lady.  They sell their water locally. Observing is Beatrice, Child Focus Africa treasurer.
